Organic Produce and the Dirty Dozen

One of the greatest differences in organic fruits and vegetables lies in how the food is grown, handled and processed. Because organic foods aren’t treated with preservatives and waxes, you may find that organic fruits and vegetables spoil more quickly than non-organic varieties.

Organic fruits and vegetables also aren’t sprayed with herbicides and pesticides, which leave a residue on the food – something many people want to reduce their exposure to whenever possible. Organic farming methods are also designed to conserve water and soil while reducing pollution, making organic foods more environmentally friendly. There is a price for these farming practices however. While these methods encourage the growth of fruits and vegetables free from herbicides and pesticides, it often means that the farming method is more labor intensive, increasing the price of the food.

If you’re interested in shopping organic and there’s a limited supply at your local supermarket, you can look for local farmers’ markets, organic foods and community supported agriculture near you. Check out this link to find out what’s being grown and harvested in your surrounding area.  Continue reading “Organic Produce and the Dirty Dozen”

Why You Should Stop Drinking Colas

Are you a soda drinker? Well, maybe you should think again…

Coca Cola and Pepsi use a chemical called 4-methylimidazole in their colas to give them their brown color. 4-methylimidazole is a known carcinogen and California law mandates that a cancer warning label be applied to any product that contains this chemical at certain levels.

Both soda companies have recently changed their ingredients to avoid the warning label in California and plan to do the same for the rest of the country… eventually.

But if the possibility of ingesting cancer causing chemicals isn’t enough to stop you from drinking the sugary brown stuff, here are a few other reasons to cut back.  Continue reading “Why You Should Stop Drinking Colas”

Prevent Kidney Stones Naturally

Kidney stones are nearly twice as common now as they were in the early 1990’s. A new study from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) has found that one in 11 people have kidney stones as compared to one in 20 in 1994. Obesity, diabetes and gout all increase the likelihood that a person will develop a kidney stone.

Experts point out that while kidney stones can be treated, they can also be prevented by eating a healthy balanced diet, staying hydrated and getting plenty of exercise.

Here are other tips to support kidney health and prevent kidney stones:

1. Maintain a healthy pH. Using a green food supplement will usually raise your pH (this is a good thing), making it more alkaline and thereby reducing the leaching of calcium. If your body is too acidic, then calcium can leach from your bones to try and neutralize the acidity. The excess calcium is sent to the kidneys, where over time stones can form. To prevent this from happening, it is important to maintain a healthy and balanced body pH. You can monitor this with pH papers. At the end of this blog, there are tips for testing your pH levels. Also, learn more about the importance of maintaining healthy pH here.

NAC and Autism

The antioxidant, N-Acetylcysteine, or NAC, was found to lower irritability in children with autism as well as reduce the children’s repetitive behaviors in a small pilot study. While further, larger studies are necessary; NAC could provide promising support for addressing repetitive behavior in autism. Currently, there is no medication to treat repetitive behavior.

Irritability affects about 70% of children with autism and can hinder learning, as well as other activities and therapies. Currently, irritability, mood swings and aggression, are mostly treated with medication that can have significant side effects such as weight gain, involuntary motor movements and metabolic syndrome. The side effects of NAC are generally mild, with gastrointestinal problems such as constipation, nausea, diarrhea and decreased appetite being the most commonly experienced.
