Diet and Fertility

Sunday, I curled up on the couch to watch “Life,” an 11 part  documentary on Discovery Channel about just that: “LIFE.”  It takes a look at all living things on earth and the challenges they face everyday. It is an amazing show and definitely a must-see. One particular moment struck me. There was a lizard that lived in the desert and she just walked and walked until she found a mate. Once, she found a suitable bachelor, they did the deed and off she went to wander the desert alone again and then lay her eggs. One time was all it took, and she was pregnant. WOW!! How does that happen? I am definitely not an expert on the reptilian reproductive system, or fertility in general, for that matter, but I do know that most humans do not get pregnant, or it seems to me, on the very first time.

Red Wine for Slim Waistline

My parents are European, and as far as I can remember  red wine has been at the table with meals. In fact, my father makes his own wine every September from scratch.  Picks his grapes, squishes them in his garage and presses that yummy juice into barrels where it ferments for months before being bottled and consumed.  My husband has also gotten into it and for the last 3 years has made merlot, cabernet and this year a red zinfandel.  Needless, to say, we enjoy a glass of wine with our dinner or at the end of the day.  I am a firm believer that there are many benefits in wine, and have written about them in a previous blog, but a new study published in the March issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine has given me yet another reason to enjoy it.  According to researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston,  light to moderate alcohol consumption, most notably red wine, is not only good for a woman’s heart, it may also help her keep her weight in check. March – Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer affecting men and women in the United States. The risk increases with age (>50 years), but when caught early is often curable. Risk factors include: polyps found in the colon or rectum, high fat diet, family history of colorectal cancer, and inflammatory conditions such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. If you are over the age of 50, or have risk factors, talk to your doctor about important screenings and testing.

Lifestyle-related factors linked to colorectal cancer include smoking, alcohol, obesity, poor diet, and inactivity. Good nutrition and regular physical activity provide a solid foundation for health and can reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases.

The Disappearing Male: Are Chemicals to Blame?

So I am on a documentary kick right now. Here is another documentary that demonstrates the link between chemicals like Bisphenol A (BPA) and their effect on male genes. Currently, the FDA has not banned use of BPA (found in many plastics, can linings, etc.), even though they are now “warning” the public to avoid it.

Here are a few ways to avoid BPA:

1. Read labels. Many products are labeled BPA-free.

2. Avoid canned foods when possible. Eat fresh whenever possible.

3. Never microwave plastic. (NEVER!)

Please leave a comment about what else you can do.
