Looking for the Perfect Protein Powder?

Protein is essential for the growth, maintenance, and repair of the body. It is needed for the manufacturing of hormones, antibodies, enzymes and tissues. When digested, proteins are broken down into amino acids, which are responsible for giving protein its nutritional value. Therefore, it is important to choose high quality protein sources such as eggs, lean poultry and meat, fish and dairy. However, many people have sensitivities to these foods.

Because I feel that eating a protein-rich breakfast is so important to starting your day off right, I have found that smoothies can be a fast and nutritious way to go. In my search for a protein powder that is suitable for most, if not all individuals, I have discovered PlantFusion. It is a great tasting, allergen-free, easy to digest, multi-sourced plant protein powder. In addition, it is a complete protein formula that has branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) and L-glutamine to support muscle and connective tissue health. Because PlantFusion is easily digested and efficiently absorbed, it provides strength and energy without irritating the digestive system. PlantFusion is well-suited for vegetarians, vegans, and individuals with food sensitivities. Continue reading “Looking for the Perfect Protein Powder?”

Part 1 of: Your Holiday Weight Gain Prevention Plan

With the holidays upon us, we often celebrate by traveling to see those we love, vacationing…and over-indulging in high fat/high calorie foods. While we look forward to many of the warm feelings and upcoming experiences a holiday can bring, one of the things we may not look forward to is giving ourselves the “gift” of a few extra pounds we’re wearing by the end of the year. If weight gain, frustration and larger clothes aren’t on your wish list, is there a way to enjoy the holiday season guilt-free? Yes, and it starts with a plan.

The first part of your “Holiday Weight Gain Prevention Plan” is to ask yourself what do holidays, time away and vacations mean to you? If you’re a chronic dieter, time away often signifies time off from healthy eating. With any type of restrictive eating, drastic changes have been made to your eating behaviors. These changes are temporary at best so we find ourselves either “on or off,” “all or nothing,” or “good or bad,” leaving a holiday as a prime opportunity to go overboard with our choices, our portions and our behaviors. Pregnancy and Vitamin D Status

Read the following article that I picked up at my doctor’s office the other day. It is a nice overall piece about vitamin D deficiency and its role in almost every aspect of this important nutrient.

More Know About Vitamin D Benefits
By Don Sapatkin

Amy McDonald, 34 weeks into her second pregnancy with gestational diabetes, was in for a routine checkup in Bala Cynwyd: blood pressure (fine), fetal heartbeat (loud), review of home blood-sugar monitoring (time-consuming).

A lab test for Vitamin D had come back low on a previous visit, and McDonald was now taking supplements.

“Any problems with the Vitamin D?” asked her doctor, Daphne M. Goldberg, who had recommended at least 10 times the dosage in federal guidelines. (No problems.)

Most women don’t hear about Vitamin D during prenatal visits. Indeed, studies linking widespread deficiency of the “sunshine vitamin” to a host of seemingly unrelated conditions – among them heart disease, arthritis, depression, psoriasis, influenza, and several types of cancer – have been coming so fast and furious that government guidelines can’t keep up. No one even knows what a “normal” level should be. Continue reading “Pregnancy and Vitamin D Status”

Your Diet Legacy and Your Daughter

As moms, we often try to instill our beliefs, values, ethics, morals and standards of behavior onto our children. Often, our goal is to ensure that our children learn from the benefit of our knowledge and experience so that they can create enriching, rewarding lives for themselves. So why is it then that one of the most significant messages moms often pass on to their daughters is the legacy of dieting?

Every mom wants the best for her children; there is no question about that. But unfortunately, when a mom lives through the emotional and physical pain that her overweight body may cause, she unknowingly passes the “right to diet” on as though it were a “right of passage” into womanhood.

Maybe the mom wants to prevent her daughter from suffering from low self-esteem. Maybe the mom wants to ensure that her daughter is spared the harsh judgment from others as a result of excess weight. Finally, maybe the mom regrets not having the confidence to pursue a goal or dream and wants to make sure her daughter doesn’t pass up similar opportunities. Is Autumn a Good Time to Cleanse?

A healthy body goes through a daily process of cleansing as well as rebuilding. And interestingly enough, if we look at the foods that we harvest in the autumn months, we find a balance between these two aspects (cleansing and rebuilding). We have veggies and fruits ready this time of year that are amazing detoxifiers, as well as those that provide wonderful nourishment and that are cancer-preventative.

So, by using the foods we naturally find available to us in the autumn months, we can take part in a cleanse that will be optimally supportive of the body.

My nutrition training spans Eastern-Western philosophies and traditions. I enjoy drawing on wisdom found in other medical approaches that can often offer very appropriate answers to questions we may not readily be able to address using just the Western model of health and disease.

Why do we get more colds and sinus infections this time of year? Continue reading “Is Autumn a Good Time to Cleanse?”
