Are You a Smart Snacker?

A study from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) found that 97% of women snack between meals. The study also found that while so many women are snacking, many of these women are less likely to be overweight if they’re snacking on the right foods and for the right reasons.

Snacking can be a great way to stay fueled and focused throughout the day. It can be an effective strategy to prevent mood and energy dips, and prevent becoming overly hungry… which can also prevent overeating later on. It can be a great way to keep your blood sugar level stable and keep you on track with a healthy weight loss and lifestyle plan.

While snacking can be a great option for many women, it can be a source of needless extra calories and weight gain for others. How can you become a “smart snacker?” It starts by identifying why you’re snacking along with taking a look at what types of foods you’re snacking on.

First, let’s take a look at why you’re snacking. To find out, ask yourself what’s motivating the snack? Is it driven by hunger – a physiological need to eat when your body is telling you that you need food? Continue reading “Are You a Smart Snacker?”

Soothe Your Sunburn

I hope you all had a fun and safe Memorial Day. It was such a nice weekend around here, lots of sun and blue skies… but unfortunately it also led to sunburns for some of us who forgot to reapply sunblock after being in the water.

So what do you do if you forgot to apply sunblock, or didn’t reapply (a very important step in sun protection) and now have angry red skin? Here are some tips to help soothe your sunburn.

1. Take anti-inflammatory support supplement like Pathway Cox 2 Support. The pain from a sunburn is usually worst between 6 and 48 hours after sun exposure.

2. If your skin is not blistering, moisturizing cream may be applied to relieve discomfort. Store the moisturizing cream in the refrigerator between applications as the coolness will aid in comfort to your skin. Aloe Vera Gel is wonderful and soothing. Apply liberally! Effective Supplement for Brown Spots

Melasma is a common disorder that is marked by hyperpigmentation of the skin, mainly on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. These brown spots often result from too much sun exposure, hormonal changes, or injury to the skin. Regardless of the cause, it can be very distressing. Conventional treatments often include chemical peels, steroid creams or laser treatments. These treatments are frequently unsuccessful and can be associated with side effects. Fortunately, there is a dietary supplement known as pycnogenol that has been found to be safe and therapeutically effective for melasma. Continue reading “Effective Supplement for Brown Spots”

Build Your Own Aromatherapy Kit

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants for healing. Although scent is a key component in the use of essential oils, they can also be applied to the skin in a massage for other direct health benefits.

Essential oils are concentrated extracts taken from the roots, leaves, seeds, or blossoms of plants. Each contains its own mix of active ingredients, and this mix determines what the oil is used for. Some oils are used to promote physical healing – for example, to treat swelling or fungal infections. Others are used for their emotional value – they may enhance relaxation or make a room smell pleasant.

What I like most about aromatherapy is that anyone can benefit from it, and essential oils are easy to use. I believe that everyone should have an aromatherapy kit that contains these three essential oils. Continue reading “Build Your Own Aromatherapy Kit”

The Best Sunscreens: EWG’s 2012 Recommendations

Environmental Working Group (EWG) has just released its 2012 sunscreen guide. Just because a sunscreen says it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s safe and harmless. Read this blog about choosing a sunscreen; it’s a good guide about what to look for when choosing protection from the sun.

Also take a look at EWG’s list of top sunscreens. It contains products at every price point, so there is no excuse to be using a conventional sunscreen that is full of chemicals. I continue to use Badger Sunscreen for both of my children. I have found it to be quite effective for my 3-year-old son and my 1-year-old (very fair) daughter.

Some of the best sunscreens can be “clay-like” or “greasy,” but I find that if I work with a pea-size amount at a time, that it absorbs well. And don’t forget to apply sunscreen to tips of ears and tops of feet. Covering up with big floppy hats and rashguards also give extra protection.

Have fun the in the sun!
