You will never find parabens, phthalates, petroleum-derived synthetics, propylene glycol, silicones, synthetic colors or synthetic fragrances in any of their products.

3 Steps to Healthy Teeth

Halloween is around the corner, and we all know what that means for parents with kids… bags of candy! Candy is a huge culprit when it comes to tooth decay. But so are soda, potato chips and even raisins!

So although it is obviously best to avoid consuming sugar-laden food, realistically, kids will probably have a few pieces.

Here are some tips to keeping your little ones’ chompers strong and cavity-free.

1. Reduce bacteria in the mouth. Since bacteria is what causes cavities and dental decay in the first place, it makes sense to try to keep it at bay. Bacteria feeds in acidic environments and it thrives on sugar… even natural sugar. So cutting back on these kinds of foods will help the mouth not to be such a prime environment for bacteria to reside. Another way to help with this is to sip on water or swish with water while you are eating, so food has less chance to stick to the teeth.  Continue reading “3 Steps to Healthy Teeth”

Polyethylene Glycol & Propylene Glycol: What Are They & What are They Doing in My Moisturizer?

As a mom, I am very concerned about what I am putting on my children’s skin… whether it be shampoos, diaper creams, or moisturizers. So I thought it would be interesting to take some questionable ingredients commonly found in products we use every day and find out what they do. First up, polyethylene glycol and propylene glycol (PEGs and PPGs).

These ingredients are used in many products as thickeners, solvents, softeners, and moisture-carriers. They are also popular emulsifiers – helping to mix two products that normally don’t mix together (for example, oil and water). Most cream-based products need some kind of emulsifier in them.

There are all sorts of names for these ingredients and they are used in many products on American shelves, but their safety for use in cosmetics is controversial. There are no restrictions on the use of PEGs in cosmetics in America. In the case of propylene glycol, as with many ingredients in products, it might not be the ingredient itself that is harmful, but process it goes through before it is used in a product that is the problem.  Continue reading “Polyethylene Glycol & Propylene Glycol: What Are They & What are They Doing in My Moisturizer?”
