Green Living Can Also Be Good For Your Health: Three Tips for Being Green and Healthy

Green living is being embraced by increasing numbers of people. Saving energy at home, using less gasoline, conserving fresh water and recycling paper, plastic and glass products all contribute to a greener lifestyle and a lower carbon footprint.

But there is another reason for going green: green living is also healthy.

Here are three tips for living a green and healthy lifestyle.

1. Start an organic garden at home. In addition to some exercise, gardening offers health benefits by allowing you to make sure that your homegrown fruit and vegetables are chemical and toxin free. And by growing some of your food at home, you reduce pollution and save fuel by not having that food shipped to you from across the country, or even from half way around the world. You also avoid the expense and pollution resulting from driving your car to a local store to buy it. A Quantum of Solace: Five Easy Ways to Save Water at Home

In the most recent installment of the James Bond movie series (Quantum of Solace), the bad guys were trying to take control of the fresh water supply in a South American country.

This is not such a far-fetched idea for a major crime.

A dripping faucet or running toilet waste water 24-7, and the amounts add up quickly.

2. Turn the water off while brushing your teeth, shaving, or washing your face. There is no need to have the faucet running continuously.

3. Take showers rather than baths and limit your showers to 5 minutes. Showers are more efficient with water than baths.
And although I love the feeling of hot water running over me as much as anyone else, limiting showers to 5 minutes Continue reading “A Quantum of Solace: Five Easy Ways to Save Water at Home”

These Measures to Improve Water Conservation Are Working

In the most recent report from my local utility (Burbank, California Power and Water), residential water usage has declined 13.1% over the past two years. Here’s why.

1) Constant communication to residents and businesses from Burbank P & W on the importance of conserving water.

2) Offering free home audits to residents to identify ways to conserve.

3) Mandatory installation of 2.5 gpm showerheads, 2.0 gpm kitchen faucet aerators, 1.6 gpf (gallon per flush) toilets in all new, remodeled, and rental buildings.

4) Landscape watering allowed on only 3 days per week, and never between the hours of 9AM and 6PM when evaporation would be the greatest.

5) No use of hose to wash driveways.

6) Restaurants offer water to patrons only if requested and all hotels in the city must offer the option for guests to reuse towels and bed linens. Continue reading “These Measures to Improve Water Conservation Are Working”
