Nutrient Deficiencies Are Common: We’re Here to Help

family-in-woodsRecent studies show that many people are not getting the nutrients their bodies need. In spite of the fact that 65% of Americans take supplements, 98% have nutrient deficiencies. Why is this? There are many factors at play here, and one of them is that taking a multivitamin without an understanding of what you need is like throwing darts in the dark.

Here are a few more reasons why nutrient deficiencies are so prevalent:

• Prescriptions can rob you of specific nutrients that are not taken into account in mass-produced multivitamins. Continue reading “Nutrient Deficiencies Are Common: We’re Here to Help”

The Truth About Supplements – Part Two

fruits_vegetablesIn last week’s post we talked about why supplementation, although it may seem like the right thing to do to ensure you get the adequate nutrients you need on a daily basis, may not always be right for you. We talked about the dangers of certain nutrients building up within the tissues of the body, which can lead to toxicity along with the additional burden placed on the body when a supplement made with inferior ingredients and offering poor absorption is used.

On the other hand, I also mentioned that since our soil is so nutritionally depleted, it’s unlikely we’re getting the nutrients we need from diet alone. This post continues the discussion, giving you more information so you can make an educated decision about whether supplementation is right for you.  Continue reading “The Truth About Supplements – Part Two”

The Truth About Supplements – Part One

SupplementsWhat is a supplement?

Supplementation is a process that has been used for decades, but the business of supplementation is bigger than ever. The news is overflowing with stories about athletes using supplements to enhance their performance and they are becoming widely used to improve mood, to combat sleep disorders and so much more. For our purposes, we’ll be focusing on dietary supplements.

A dietary supplement is intended to provide nutrients that may be lacking in sufficient amounts in your body because your diet may not be adequately balanced. These supplements are found in the form of vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids – the macro and micronutrients our bodies need for survival. These products may be beneficial to someone who is deficient in a certain nutrient because of a certain health condition, diet restrictions or because certain foods have been eliminated or neglected in their daily intake. However, there is risk for overuse when a supplement is taken regularly and not needed.  Continue reading “The Truth About Supplements – Part One”

Antioxidants: Why You Need Them and How to Get Them

What are antioxidants?

Antioxidants are vitamins, minerals and other nutrients found in a wide variety of fruits and vegetables that protect and repair our body’s cells. Free radicals from environmental toxins and our body’s breakdown of processed foods can cause damage to our arteries, immune system and overall health, leading to chronic diseases that many Americans suffer from today. Antioxidants help eliminate these free radicals, boost immunity, and prevent any damage done to our body’s tissues.

Where do they come from?

Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is a great way to incorporate antioxidants into a healthy lifestyle! The three main vitamin antioxidants are beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E found in deeply colored fruits and vegetables. It is best to eat most fruits and vegetables raw or lightly steamed to avoid the loss of these beneficial nutrients from heat during cooking.  Continue reading “Antioxidants: Why You Need Them and How to Get Them”
