Rewire the Brain to Bounce Back from Setbacks Faster and Easier

meditationAccording to Linda Graham, psychotherapist and author of Bouncing Back, resilience is: “The capacity to respond to pressures and tragedies quickly, adaptively and effectively.”

So why do we need to be resilient?

It’s inevitable that in our lifetimes, circumstances will come along that throw us off track. We can lose a job… or lose a loved one. We can argue with a coworker… or discover we’ve been betrayed at the deepest level by someone we trusted. We can be struggling with finances… or receive news that forever changes our lives in an instant. Continue reading “Rewire the Brain to Bounce Back from Setbacks Faster and Easier”

5 Essential Oils for Stress and Anxiety

essential-oilsEssential oils and diffusers are very trendy right now. They have been used for centuries to soothe and heal. Not just used to make your home smell nice, you can also use essential oils for stress and as a natural way to relieve anxiety. This is what aromatherapy is; the science and art of using scent for our health. And anyone can benefit from it.

Essential oils are highly concentrated, aromatic plant extracts generally derived through steam distillation. They are much stronger than the flowers, herbs, or trees they come from. Hundreds or even thousands of pounds of a plant can go into making just one pound of its essential oil. Continue reading “5 Essential Oils for Stress and Anxiety”

Forgiveness is Just a Word, Until You Actually Do It

thoughtfulForgiveness is just a word until you actually do it.

It can also cover a wide range of degrees. “I’m sorry” is as much a part of our vernacular as “Good morning” and “How are you,” but we apply it to so many different types of situations. We can go from, “I’m sorry I spilled the milk,” to “I’m sorry I crashed the car,” to “I’m sorry I destroyed your life.” Within each of these situations, forgiveness asks something very different from us. Forgiveness is often a very misunderstood concept, too.

So what does it actually mean to forgive? Continue reading “Forgiveness is Just a Word, Until You Actually Do It”

Taking Steps to Conquer Your Fear

fear-thoughtfulWhat is fear? According to Google, fear is “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.” But as many of us know, fear is a lot more than an unpleasant emotion. Fear is the thing that holds us back, that prevents us from achieving our potential, that keeps us firmly rooted in an unhealthy place we want to move away from. So why are we so afraid of overcoming something that is clearly so detrimental to our physical, mental, emotional or spiritual well-being – if not all of the above? The truth may be a little hard to swallow. Continue reading “Taking Steps to Conquer Your Fear”

Music is a Natural Antidepressant

music-listeningMusic has transformative powers. For centuries people have used music to express themselves and lift their spirits. The great news is that music still holds its miraculous mystique.

Research has shown that music releases neurotransmitters, chemicals that are released from nerve endings which actually “transmit” signals, via amino acids, from one nerve ending to another. So imagine dominoes – once one is kicked-off, the others follow. Dopamine is one of the neurotransmitters that ignites the reward and pleasure centers of our brain, and the right song can give your body a dose. And as such, music is a natural antidepressant.

You know how you need a good cry every once in a while? Sad music can help release sad emotions, getting them up and out. Many of us can all relate to a great “break-up” song that allowed us to mourn the loss of a love through those free-flowing tears. And there’s nothing wrong with that – just be sure not to use the sad music to stay in that place for too long. Continue reading “Music is a Natural Antidepressant”
