Watching the joy in my kids faces as they see their costumes transform them into what they had imagined makes it all worth it. Snack Today: Pumpkin Chickpea Hummus

pumpkin-chickpea-hummusHappy Halloween! The last few days around our house have been spent carving pumpkins and roasting seeds. Although most people compost the insides of the pumpkin, I say save them and use it to make this great hummus. It makes a great snack, while you are handing out candy!

Pumpkins contain a rich supply of beta carotene and alpha carotene. Loaded with fiber, vitamins and minerals, you’ll get a mouthful of potassium, magnesium, selenium, and lutein in every bite, plus a good dose of vitamins A, C and E.

3 Steps to Healthy Teeth

Halloween is around the corner, and we all know what that means for parents with kids… bags of candy! Candy is a huge culprit when it comes to tooth decay. But so are soda, potato chips and even raisins!

So although it is obviously best to avoid consuming sugar-laden food, realistically, kids will probably have a few pieces.

Here are some tips to keeping your little ones’ chompers strong and cavity-free.

1. Reduce bacteria in the mouth. Since bacteria is what causes cavities and dental decay in the first place, it makes sense to try to keep it at bay. Bacteria feeds in acidic environments and it thrives on sugar… even natural sugar. So cutting back on these kinds of foods will help the mouth not to be such a prime environment for bacteria to reside. My 3-year-old is very excited about trick-or-treating because he knows that he will get loads of candy and get to dress up as Spider-Man. But did you know that the average kid will take home 7 pounds of candy tonight?

1. Kids are said to prefer receiving chocolate candy over other types of candy on Halloween.

2. Parents admit to sneaking candy from their children’s treat bags.
