What’s for Dinner? GMOs and Glyphosate

corn-on-the-cobSummer is the time for fresh produce, and what could be better than buying local corn? We stopped at a roadside stand and admired the array of vegetables. The ears of corn all looked perfect and also identical – they were same size, same girth and same color. Even the tassels were the same length. So I casually asked the roadside attendant, “Is this GMO corn?”

Both my kids rolled their eyes and turned around, looking for any possible escape from this embarrassing situation. The woman looked at me with a blank stare and said, “Well, I don’t know what GMO is, but it’s sweet corn.” Continue reading “What’s for Dinner? GMOs and Glyphosate”

DARK Act Defeated: A Win for American Consumers

GMO-labeling-2Last Wednesday, the U.S. Senate rejected a controversial bill that would have made labeling genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in food products voluntary. Also known as the DARK Act (Deny Americans the Right to Know), the bill would have undone any labeling laws that some states have already passed (most notably, Vermont’s GMO labeling law that is set to go into effect on July 1, 2016), and it would actually have made it harder, if not impossible, for the Food and Drug Administration to require mandatory national labeling of GMOs.

Instead, the Senate did the right thing. Against pressures and huge lobbying efforts from corporations like Monsanto, they voted against it. Wenonah Hauter, Executive Director of Food & Water Watch, said, “People want to know if the food they buy contains GMO ingredients. It’s time for Congress to create a mandatory on-package labeling requirement so people can decide for themselves whether they want to eat a food that has been produced using genetic engineering.”

Polls show that GMO labeling is supported by over 90% of Americans. Continue reading “DARK Act Defeated: A Win for American Consumers”

Whole Foods Backs Down to GMO Giant Monsanto

After 12 years of fighting this biotech giant, Whole Foods has backed down from trying to stop Monsanto genetically engineered (GE, or GMO) crops from contaminating the nation’s 25,000 organic farms and ranches, saying that GMOs and organic plants have to coexist in this world. Biotechnology is big business. The mother of agricultural technology, Monsanto reported sales of approximately 10.5 billion dollars in 2010. They make Roundup, the name given to the herbicide glyphosate, the most used herbicide on the planet. They also make genetically modified seeds that can tolerate very high doses of Roundup.

Genetically modified seeds or foods are made from genetically modified organisms, commonly known as GMOs. These GMOs have had changes made to their DNA by genetic engineering. The FDA does not regulate GMOs and Monsanto will try to convince you that GMOs are safe and that they are helping stop hunger by providing the capability to grow foods that are hardier and stronger.

However, here are eight reasons according to organicauthority.com why genetically modified organisms are bad:  Continue reading “Whole Foods Backs Down to GMO Giant Monsanto”
