Taking Antibiotics? Probiotics Are Extremely Helpful

probiotics help antibioticsAre you about to start a course of antibiotics? Well, don’t forget your probiotics. While the appropriate use of antibiotics does serve a role in fighting off unruly bacterial infections, it can also do a number on your gastrointestinal tract (and vaginal tract for females).

As the public’s familiarity with probiotics increases, thanks to the marketing of such products as Activia yogurt, the advice to supplement with probiotics while on antibiotics isn’t so “alternative” anymore. Continue reading “Taking Antibiotics? Probiotics Are Extremely Helpful”

5 Tips for GI Discomfort During the Holidays

teaHoliday season is upon us, which means parties, get-togethers and lots of overindulging. Overeating or feasting on foods that you do not eat on a regular basis can cause uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating, gas, heartburn and abdominal pressure. Don’t let indigestion or GI discomfort put a damper on your holiday cheer. Below are some of my favorite remedies for easing gas and bloating.

Two Important Tests for GI Health Offered Through Village Green

gi-health-2As a nutritionist, I answer a lot of questions about a variety of different health challenges. But, the body system that seems to bring the most people to Village Green searching for natural solutions is the digestive system. Uncomfortable symptoms such as indigestion, abdominal pain, heartburn, gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea can be debilitating. More and more evidence is showing that GI function and the gut microbiome are critical for optimal health and play a role in so many conditions including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, mood disorders, autoimmune diseases and autism. Therefore, in my opinion, healing the digestive system truly is the place to start when dealing with any health concern, not just GI complaints. Tests for GI health can be very useful. melatoninWhen I think of the supplement melatonin, the first thing that comes to mind is supporting sleep. It can be very helpful for initiating sleep, increasing sleep duration, as well as regulating circadian rhythm and reducing jet lag. But, new research shows many more exciting health benefits of melatonin. For example, studies indicate that it can also protect against neurodegenerative diseases and brain injury, help with migraines, provide important support for cancer patients, support heart health, and protect the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

Melatonin is a hormone that is produced from the pineal gland in the brain. But, it is now known that it is also produced in multiple sites in the body. In fact, up to 500 times more melatonin is synthesized in the intestinal tract than in the pineal gland. Derived from the amino acid L-tryptophan, melatonin has powerful antioxidant capabilities and anti-inflammatory properties. Promising new areas of research include: Continue reading “Health Benefits of Melatonin – Not Just for Sleep!”
