Obesity Beats Smoking as Top Health Risk

Researchers from Columbia University and the City College of New York say that obesity causes as much or more disease than tobacco. One of the reasons is that while smoking rates are beginning to decline, obesity is on the rise and actually shortens as many or even more lifespans than smoking.

The study, conducted over 15 years, was based on interviews with more than 3.5 million people and calculations of the number of “quality-adjusted life years” (QALYs) lost to obesity and smoking. Between 1993 and 2008, smoking in American adults declined by 18.5 per cent, while the proportion of obese people increased by 85 per cent, the study says. How to Stick to Your Resolutions: The Buddy System

We bring it on ourselves. The pressure of picking a resolution and the extra pressure of trying to keep it.  Perhaps it’s the idea of starting fresh with a clean slate.  Maybe it’s the non-stop vision of Valerie Bertinelli, telling us that we too could lose 40 pounds in a month eating all our favorite sweets.  Whatever it is, resolutions seem like a good idea when we are coming up with them, but they are always (ALWAYS) hard to keep.

Tips for the Postpartum Blues

I had Joe 10 months ago. He is my first child and he brings me so much love, joy and excitement…NOW…10 months ago it was a different story. Everyone always told me that nothing could prepare for life with a new baby, especially emotionally, and boy was that true. What surprised me the most was how truly hard everything seemed to be, and in reality it was.
