Blueberries have wonderful health boosting properties. Here are 10 benefits that might encourage you to eat blueberries every day.

1. Memory loss – Researchers at Tufts University in Boston found that aging mice that were given blueberry extract improved their balance, coordination and short-term memory. Anthocyanin, which gives the blueberries their strong bluish purple color, appears to protect the neurons in the brain.

2. Anti-aging – Blueberries contain high levels of antioxidants which help get rid of free radicals in the blood. New Study: Blueberries Can Help Fight Alzheimer’s

blueberries can help fight alzheimer'sAlzheimer’s disease is a devastating form of dementia that affects thinking, memory and behavior. A new study by Dr. Robert Krikorian and his team of colleagues from the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center has found that eating blueberries can help fight Alzheimer’s.

The study followed two groups, one that was given the equivalent of 1 cup of blueberries (in the form of blueberry powder) and the other, a placebo. The subjects were over the age of 68 and had some sort of mild cognitive impairment.

After 16 weeks, the group that was given the blueberry powder had a significant improvement in cognitive function over those who took the placebo. Blueberries: Small in Size, Big in Antioxidant Capability

Among fruits, blueberries have one of the highest antioxidant capacities. Like cranberries, blueberries promote urinary tract health. They have also been shown to support memory, balance, and coordination. Blueberries also support eye health by increasing circulation of the capillaries of the eyes, which reduces oxidation in these tissues. They also strengthen other capillaries, as well as arteries and veins. And, blueberries have anti-inflammatory properties.

In a recent study, blueberries were given to athletes to measure their health benefits. Because strenuous exercise acutely generates oxidative stress as well as an inflammatory state, it serves as a great way to test antioxidant and anti-inflammatory capabilities. Subjects were given 250 g of blueberries per day for 6 weeks and 375 g 1 hour prior to 2.5 hour of running.

Twenty-five well-trained subjects were randomized into blueberry or control groups. Blood, muscle, and urine samples were obtained pre-exercise and immediately post-exercise, and blood and urine 1 hour post-exercise. Blood was examined for oxidative stress, cortisol, cytokines, homocysteine, leukocytes, T-cell function, natural killer (NK), and lymphocyte cell counts for inflammation and immune system activation, and antioxidant capacity.
