Snack Today: GORP
Paula Gallagher on
For years I have heard the term GORP and associated it with trail mix but never really knew where the name came from. Well, thanks to Google, I have recently found out that GORP may be an acronym for "good old raisins and peanuts" or alternately, "granola, oats, raisins, peanuts." But whatever the acronym, GORP is trail mix and can be a nutritionally dense and tasty treat that can provide long-lasting energy, making it perfect for summer outdoor activities like hiking.
The great thing about trail mix is that you can can add any type of nuts, seeds and dried fruit to it and make it your own. I suggest heading to your local bulk store and build the GORP of your dreams. Walnuts, cashews, coconut flakes, dried cherries – the choices are endless! Look for dried fruit that does not contains sulfates and unsalted nuts. This mix can be thrown directly into your day bag with no need to keep cold (but don't let it get too warm if you add chocolate chips!). And because GORP can be anything you really want, mine is peanut and raisin free.
GORP
• 1 cup raw or roasted unsalted almonds
• 3/4 cup halved dried apricots
• 1/2 cup unsalted shelled pistachios
• 1/2 cup raw unsalted pumpkin seeds
• 1/2 cup dried mango slices
• 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips
• 1/4 cup dried cranberries
Add all ingredients to large jar and shake well. Seal and store at room temperature for up to 2 months.
