If you want improved brain function, get up and move. A recent review published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine has found that as little as 45 minutes of exercise per week can improve brain function in your 50s and older.
This is MAJOR! In the past studies have found that exercise has a hand in slowing cognitive decline but this review has showed that exercise improves brain function, even in people who already have mild cognitive impairment.
The study looked at the benefits of exercises which combined both elements of aerobic and resistance training, such as circuits, tai chi, yoga and weight training. All were found to benefit cognitive function, in particular the ability to process information rapidly, stay alert, make goal-orientated decisions, and get the most out of their long-term and short-term memories.
Currently the American Heart Association recommends healthy adults get 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. However, most Americans do not come near these numbers. According to the website fitness.gov, only one in three adults get the recommended amount of physical activity each week.
The best type of exercise is finding something you enjoy so that you stick to it. Exercise also has many other benefits, including stress relief, lowering blood pressure, maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, and keeping cholesterol in check.
