Recently, I wrote about my home renovation, as well as tips to make your home healthier. Well, the renovation is done, and we are happy that the chaos, noise and dust is over with. Before starting the whole process we did some research on how to make our house more environmentally friendly and energy efficient. And although we think we did a pretty good job at sourcing locally made cabinets, local hardwood, and choosing low VOC paints and stains, I wish we had come across this excellent resource from the Environmental Working Group, EWG’s Healthy Living: Home Guide.
The Home Guide provides information about what to look for when choosing products for your home, from paint to flooring to choosing light bulbs. It includes more than 20 different categories for building, making improvements and furnishing your home. You’ll find quick, inexpensive changes you can make, as well as bigger changes and investments you can take on when building, remodeling or redecorating.
The healthy home guide includes information about all of these areas:
• Air filters
• Carpet
• Caulks, sealants & adhesives
• Ceiling tiles
• Cleaners & air fresheners
• Decking
• Drywall
• Energy efficiency
• Flooring
• Insulation
• Kitchen cabinets & countertops
• Lights
• Mattresses
• Paint
• Plumbing & pipes
• Reducing household dust
• Upholstered furniture

So whether you are about to embark on a major renovation or just want to take the first step in making the environment you live in a healthier one for you and your family, be sure to check out the guide first.
