Boost Cancer Protection with These Two Nutrients
Paula Gallagher on
Two is better than one, especially when it comes to certain foods and their health benefits. Many foods contain nutrients that work synergistically. Food synergy occurs when two or more nutrients work together to achieve a health benefit that is greater than what either could produce on their own. For example, if you combine tomatoes and broccoli in a stew or a soup, their combined disease fighting chemicals help protect against prostate cancers more effectively than if you ate them alone.
For the next few weeks, I will be letting you know about nutrients that are power couples and their most potent health benefits. First up:
Ellagic Acid and Quercetin for Cancer Protection
Quercetin is a flavonoid (plant pigment) commonly found in fruits and vegetables, especially onions, citrus, and apples. The main benefit of quercetin is that it possesses potent antioxidants. Antioxidants fight against free radicals – chemically reactive compounds that damage cell membranes and DNA and also cause cell death, which can lead to cancer. Researchers have discovered that ellagic acid enhances quercetin’s cancer cell killing power. Ellagic acid is a phytochemical, or plant chemical, found in raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, walnuts, pecans, and pomegranates.
One way you can get the benefits of this cancer protective duo is with diet. Try adding sliced apples and pomegrante seeds to a green salad, or baking them into a muffin. Another way is to try Pathway Berry Fusion. Pathway Berry Fusion combines foods rich in both quercetin and ellagic acid in an easy-to-mix powder. (It’s also delicious.)
Next week: Folate and vitamin B6 for heart health.
