Tap Water, Bottled Water, Filtered Water? What’s the Safest to Drink, and Why?

“Water, water everywhere, and nary a drop to drink.”

You may recognize this quotation from the famous poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, “Rime of the Ancient Mariner.” The line refers to being stranded at sea, surrounded by water, yet with no drinkable water left on board the ship.

These words have been oft-quoted since the publication of the poem in the late 1790’s, usually to refer to a situation in which clean drinking water has been hard to come by. While in this country we are lucky enough to have ample drinking water, sadly it may not be as clean as we’d expect. I’m not saying that there is “nary a drop to drink” – however accessing clean and safe drinking water is not just as simple as purchasing a bottle of “spring” water from your local convenience store or turning on the faucet at home to fill up your glass.

Two questions I am frequently asked by my clients are: “Is bottled water better than tap water?” and “If I’m using tap water, what filter should I use on my tap?” Continue reading “Tap Water, Bottled Water, Filtered Water? What’s the Safest to Drink, and Why?”

Bagnetic: The end of Plastic bags

Did you know that less than 1% of plastic bags actually ever get recycled?  The rest end up in landfills and oceans and take millions of years to completely break down.  Think about how many bags you use every time you hit the grocery store. Multiply by that by your number of visits per week, then by 52 weeks per year and then by millions of people…  you see the problem.  Many stores have started to charge for bags, to encourage people to use their own bags.

A company called Bagnetic has taken it one step further and developed trendy reusable bags that are easy to store and carry, and are made of non-toxic and durable materials. Bringing in your own bags is one step that we can all do to make this a better place to live. Everyday should be Earth Day.

Green Kitchen Appliances

How do you know when it “pays” to replace a kitchen appliance? Conventional wisdom says wait until it stops working, or until it needs a repair that costs more than the unit is worth.

Efficient performance is the new holy grail, as more smart consumers make choices based on real-life operating cost, as well as features. Recently-built appliances by reliable US companies now can pay for themselves in energy and water savings in as little as 5 years. If your current models are older than 10, they could be costing you between $125-$150 per year in operating costs (verifiable with home energy monitor kits). That’s like paying for a $100+ repair every other year! Continue reading “Green Kitchen Appliances”
