EWG Releases 2020 Guide to Sunscreens

sunscreensIt’s that time of year again when the Environmental Working Group (EWG) puts together their list of the safest and most effective sunscreens. This year the EWG  rated 730 sunscreens, 460 daily moisturizers and 100 lip products with SPF values, with a score from 0 to 10. The score measured both the degree of protection from the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and the hazards of all ingredients on the label. The best products are rated 0 to 2 (green). Products that are rated 3 to 6 (yellow) have moderate hazards to health and lesser protection, and from 7 to 10 (red) are considered high hazards to health and least protection. Essential Oils 101

essential oils 101My journey with essential oils and aromatherapy started over 20 years ago when I started having sleep issues. I used a balm that had calming essential oils. I noticed the benefits immediately and since then, I have continued to use essential oils for many purposes. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils from plants for healing. skin careThe other day, my daughter reached out to hold my hand and she commented on how rough my hands were. With skating, skiing and shoveling, the cold air and whipping winds have dried out my skin, and to be truthful, I have not been the best at taking better care of it. In addition, cold and flu season has meant that my hands, in particular, have taken a beating from all the hand washing. So, here are some tips to help you sport soft, glowing skin in the winter, while enjoying your favorite cold weather activities.

1. Apply sunscreen: Just because you are wearing a coat, that shouldn’t mean that the sunscreen gets put away. Continue reading “5 Tips to Protect Your Skin in Winter”

5 Supplements for Healthy Skin

healthy skinGlowing, healthy looking skin is a result of genetics, lifestyle habits, what you put on your skin, and what you put in your body. Unfortunately, winter can leave your skin a little dry, red and flaky. Using natural products and moisturizing regularly are helpful, but your skin care routine is only half the battle. These five supplements can help your skin look softer and more radiant.

1. Omega 3: Omega-3 fatty acids are needed for healthy cell membranes, helping your skin remove waste and lock in moisture. They lower inflammation and may reduce signs of aging. Continue reading “5 Supplements for Healthy Skin”

What Your Nails Say About Your Health

fingernailsFrom itch scratchers to penny picker-uppers, our fingernails play an essential role in our everyday life, but most of us pay little attention to them. They may be worth a closer look, though, since they can be a strong indicator of our overall health.

The growth of your nails begins under your skin, and as new cells grow, they push the old ones up through your skin. So, what you see when you look at your fingernails are the mature cells (yup, the dead cells), which is why you can cut your nails without pain. The part of the nail that is attached (nail bed) has a thin layer of dermis, which has sensory nerve endings, Continue reading “What Your Nails Say About Your Health”
